I love to shop! I do not love to spend lots of money that I do not have. What’s a girl (or boy) to do? Check out POSHMARK! You will find gently used and brand new items galore! A sellers listings are listed in their “closet”. Some sellers are just listing a few things from their home closet while for some like me, it’s a mix of items from my closet and bargain hunting finds. For some sellers, it’s a full time job and for others they are trying to fund a summer vacation. Personally, I am trying to pay for medical care. Cancer, chemotherapy, COBRA insurance is uber expensive!
Are you just dying to get a COACH bag but just cannot see paying $400 when you just had to spend $200 per kid for school supplies, band rentals, fill up the lunch accounts, buy bookbags, shoes and clothes? Check out Poshmark. You may find a brand new COACH bag for a little less than retail or a gently used bag for $50 to $100. That is much better that $400. Plus, you have the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting someone’s small business not a big corporation!! You are helping a family go on vacation, a parent be a stay at home mom or dad or like me pay for the cost of health care when cancer throws you are curve ball!
“But I can’t try it on “. Well no, you can’t. Here is the solution to that problem: get a tape measure and measure yourself, your child etc. If the listing does not report measurements, ask for them. Personally, I tend to stick to brands I know due to fit. For example, for me Talbots runs small. So if a listing says “Talbot’s Slacks, size 12” I know I need to go up a size. This listing may not be for me. On the other hand, Christopher & Banks (CJ Banks) runs true to size for me. I know if a listing for Christopher & Banks says Size 14, I am good.
I bet you have brands in your closet that you go back to over and over. Why do you think that is? Most likely because the brand is consistant in size. Add to that the brand uses colors and styles you like and you find yourself with 10 Liz Claiborne blouses in your closet. Ask yourself, do I need 10 Liz blouses? They still have a lot of life in them but 4 of the 10 are black. Maybe list one or two of the blouses and a few pair of jeans. Jeans go well on PM. This reminds me of one thing: disclose all stains, tears, flaws etc. People understand that jeans may be a little frayed at the hem just let them know up front!
Another reason to give Poshmark a try? Small closets! Over the years we have moved to bigger and bigger closets but unless you are a cazillionare, your closet is only so big. Some stuff I still donate because I just don’t think it will sell on Poshmark but for the most part I give it a try. I try to use the one item in one item out rule. I buy a new shirt then one has to go. Now, if I buy a new skirt, I list an item from my home closet on Poshmark. You can list as little as one item but you will get more traffic with more listings. It’s just like any store, if no one sees your listings, they won’t sell. Poshmark involves following others closets and sharing your items on the news feed. For the most part, sellers are also buyers. The more you share, the more you will sell. This model works really well. I was on Poshmark 3 days and I made my first sale!! I’m still waiting to make a sale on Etsy a year later. There is no way for buyers to find your shop on Etsy as there is with Poshmark. I have a cousin who does very well on Etsy (check out The Peach Pod on Etsy) but for me it has been a bust.
You can also be just a buyer on Poshmark. You do not have to open a closet. They will ask you to create a profile but that’s it. You can list a few brands you like so they will come up in your feed. As a buyer, if you see a way cool Earth Yoga top and the seller is asking $45 and you think they are cra cra then you can make an offer. $45 is too much but you think $30 is just right! The seller can accept that or counter offer. They may think you are a few fries short of a Happy Meal for offering $30 so they may counter at $40 and so on. Pretty cool, huh?
At one point PM was all ladies clothes but now they do infants, toddlers, children’s, men’s and ladies. They allow UNOPENED make-up, shoes, hair accessories and jewelry also. Some people put things that are not allowed like movies, candles and coffee cups. PM will block these items if they catch you. They can also shut down your closet. Why take a chance? I have heard that PM is opening a site with home decor but it just a rumour. Time will tell.
POSHMARK is a lot of fun in my opinion. I invite you to check it out especially as fall approaches and you know what is right around the corner!!! What ever will you wear to the office Holiday Party?
